How it Works

The impact of an EV charger installation varies based on the requirements for the new circuit and how the supply cable is routed from your meter or consumer unit to the charge point. It’s essential to note that EV charge points require their dedicated circuit, not merely a spur from an external socket. Given the higher current requirement for charging an EV, ensuring the cable’s suitable size is crucial. My approach involves determining the most appropriate and discreet route for the supply cable based on your property’s individual layout.

Location of your meter and considerations

Additionally, in compliance with recent Wiring Regulations amendments, surge protection is a requirement for all new circuits, including those for EV charging.

Upon accepting our quote, we’ll schedule your installation, conduct necessary testing, commission the charge point, and provide you with an electrical installation certificate and relevant notifications to both DNO and building control.
My goal is to ensure a smooth and compliant installation process, tailored to your property’s unique specifications. Contact me to begin the journey toward your efficient EV charging solution.

V2G & V2H BI-DIRECTIONAL CHARGING

Introduction: Bi-Directional Compatibility

For efficient charging, both Electric Vehicles (EVs) and their chargers need to have compatible bi-directional converters. These converters facilitate the safe conversion of the EV’s energy from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC), ensuring a secure transfer of power to the designated recipient.

1. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Technology

The most prevalent form of bi-directional charging, V2G technology empowers EV owners to send excess energy back to the grid. This not only contributes to the grid but also offers a potential income stream. It necessitates both a compatible EV and a bi-directional charger for successful implementation.

2. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) Technology

V2H technology requires a fitting connector to channel power back into the home. It enables the storage of solar energy generated during the day, offering a cost-effective alternative to grid electricity and serving as a reliable backup power source for the home. For optimal utilization, a compatible bidirectional charger and EV are essential.
Additional Equipment:
CT Meter Installation: A Current Transformer (CT) meter is indispensable, particularly when the connection carries a load exceeding 100 Amps. It needs installation at the main grid connection point to support the connection effectively.

Developments and Limited Product Availability

The field of EV charging, especially in bi-directional technology, is under active development by numerous companies. At the present stage, product availability is limited. Wallbox is one of the companies that have developed a bi-directional charger. Currently, only three EV models—Nissan Leaf, Ford F150 Lightning, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV—support this technology. As advancements continue, new information will be added to this site as it becomes available.
